Reverse engineering a smart home setup
My new home is definitely smart - CAT5 cabling, smart thermostats, wireless access points, gigabit internet, and more. But there's the thing - there's no manuals, diagrams, or help guides.
So far we've encountered heating and hot water with a mind of it's own, an old wifi network we can't connect to, and all kinds of interesting challenges. To me, this is part of the fun!
The first thing I'm setting about fixing is the wifi mesh that's around the house. A number of UniFi Wireless Access points are in place around the house, but they're set up for the previous homeowner's router, so it's a case of taking them down, pin-hole resetting them all, and setting them back up again.
Some are within easy reach, some are a bit higher up and I'll need my ladders, but I was really surprised at how easy the setup was with these, simply using my Google Pixel to connect to them.
In a large three storey house, I was pleasantly surprised to be getting high download speeds and excellent coverage with just one of these setup. I'm looking forward to continuing this setup over the next few days.
